St Michael and All Angels Church Grade I Listed Church

Berwick

Nestled in the South Downs between Lewes and Polegate lies the peaceful village of Berwick. St Michael and All Angels Grade 1 listed church in Berwick, East Sussex is most well-known for its extensive 20th Century paintings by Duncan Grant, Vanessa Bell and Quentin Bell, which were commissioned during the Second World War by Bishop Bell (see Bloomsbury in Berwick).

We completed and safeguarded the restoration project to provide facilities for visitors. Works included a W.C. extension to the north of the tower and incorporating a kitchenette. It was all built in flint and stone using traditional methods in keeping with the look and feel of this beautiful church.

We extended the porch with new stonework to create an airlock which will protect the paintings

Externally we have lowered the path around the tower to reduce damp ingress and provide access to the South porch. All throughout this project we worked closely alongside archaeologists and the conservation team.

We received the Sussex Heritage Ecclesiastical Award 2023 for our work in this historic church.
