New Build Flint and Brick Barn and Garage

Framfield

In June 2017 we began the construction of a new 4 bedroom 300 square meter flint and brick house to replace unwanted agricultural barns on a rural plot. The clients asked for a replica farm building designed and constructed using traditional building techniques. These techniques were also used to build a new three bay oak framed garage with slate roof and solar PV panels built to replace another redundant barn. The solar PV panels work to support the air source heat pump creating an energy self-sufficient home. Work finished in July 2018.

Extension and Renovation

Five Ashes

In this heritage project, Chalvington Barns sympathetically added a seamless two storey extension to enhance and, blend with, a period coach house in rural Sussex. As well as the extension which houses a new kitchen, utility room, bedroom with ensuite bathroom the property's setting has been further enriched by landscaping works to the rear patio and garden.

Extension and Renovation

Alfriston

Chalvington Barns project managed the complete renovation of a 1970's detached house from concept through to completion. Our remodelling transformed a dated, tired building into an exciting contemporary home through the addition a two storey extension and the use of many innovative fixtures, fittings and finishes.

St Michael and All Angels Church Grade I Listed Church

Berwick

Nestled in the South Downs between Lewes and Polegate lies the peaceful village of Berwick. St Michael and All Angels Grade 1 listed church in Berwick, East Sussex is most well-known for its extensive 20th Century paintings by Duncan Grant, Vanessa Bell and Quentin Bell, which were commissioned during the Second World War by Bishop Bell (see Bloomsbury in Berwick).

We completed and safeguarded the restoration project to provide facilities for visitors. Works included a W.C. extension to the north of the tower and incorporating a kitchenette. It was all built in flint and stone using traditional methods in keeping with the look and feel of this beautiful church.

We extended the porch with new stonework to create an airlock which will protect the paintings

Externally we have lowered the path around the tower to reduce damp ingress and provide access to the South porch. All throughout this project we worked closely alongside archaeologists and the conservation team.

Barn Conversion

Five Ashes

Traditional building techniques were used to convert three adjoining East Sussex agricultural barns into a contemporary home. The roof was re-tiled using existing and reclaimed clay tiles whilst the interior was redesigned retaining many original features. New work was sympathetically designed to enhance the barns' character which included fitting new timber window frames and oak trusses to strengthen the vaulted ceilings. Restoration work is also being carried out to a further brick barn for use as a workshop. It has been re-roofed in slate tile and will be fitted with new joinery.

Barn Conversion and Renovation

Cousley Wood

A barn conversion with new build link as well as partial renovations to adjacent cottage in Wadhurst, East Sussex. An existing, structurally unstable barn was replaced with a new-build timber framed replica with oak trusses, reclaimed tiles, timber windows and bi-fold doors providing a new sitting room, study and bathroom as well as timber framed garage. The new build link between the barn and the adjacent cottage provided a new entrance hall. In addition to the original contract, the client requested renovation work to the cottage which included a new kitchen extension creating an open plan kitchen and dining room, new kitchen, lighting and new tiled floor.

The project, including the additional works, was completed on budget and on time in 5½ months.

Oak Framed Garage & Porches

Chalvington Barns' experienced team designed, planned, project managed and constructed a new double-bay, oak-framed garage with electric doors, turning what was an ordinary brick garage into an attractive feature that enhanced the home.

Annex

East Sussex

Tucked away in the depths of East Sussex, we worked closely with the owners of this property on a complete renovation of an old barn into an annex for guests. This comprised of a mezzanine bedroom with ensuite, open plan living area and kitchenette. The space was also to be used as a music room.

The original mill house was sadly flooded and therefore a full renovation of the house was carried out including a 9-inch brick flood wall built around the property. A new oak balcony and oak porch was added from our supplier Oak Frames Direct. We redesigned the ground floor and basement, changing external doors and windows. We re-plumbed and re-wired throughout, lay new flooring, installed a new kitchen, bathroom and full decoration. The client chose a timeless parquet flooring supplied by E C Forest and installed by DM Flooring.

Farmhouse

Sussex

A Sussex Farmhouse with a complex of outbuildings. This is an ongoing project for Chalvington Barns which started with converting the existing pool house. We re-built the pool house from the brick walls above and added a new timber frame and roof. Once the base was completed, we installed new double glazed sliding doors, new flooring internally, a new kitchen area and a separate changing room and cloakroom.

The next phase of this project involves converting a three bay garage into an Annex, laundry room and plant room. Upstairs will be a one-bedroom annex/studio apartment with a new kitchen and ensuite.

Downstairs, we are installing underfloor heating throughout, a laundry room, hall and cloakroom to access upstairs and a plant room for all the services to the house and outbuildings.

The main farmhouse we will convert to offer more suitable accommodation that is better suited to the family. This will include a new kitchen, breakfast room, study and entrance porch. The existing roof will be replaced and tile hanging added to the whole of the property. All windows will be upgraded or replaced.

Tiles supplied by Aldershaw.

Timber cladding with oak beams supplied by Copford Sawmill.

Double glazed sliding doors supplied by Project Glazing.
